Exploring the New Palette | A Conversation with Color Specialist Sofia Skold

Colors go far beyond being just shades on objects; they tell stories and are a vehicle for personal expression. In an exploration of their deeper significance, we spoke with Sofia Skold, a UK/Sweden-based color specialist, whose creative practice spans painting, design, writing, and children's clothing development.

What comes to mind when looking at our SS24 color palette?

What meanings or significance do these shades hold? Your SS24 color palette speaks of freedom and energy. Blueberry ice cream, bubblegum, soda, bicycle rides, surfing. Misty mornings, warm evenings, scented erasers, and wet paint. Badminton, skipping rope, and splash pools. Playing and laughing as if it were 1991 again.

What current color trends are catching your eye, and are there specific palettes or tones gaining popularity?

Playful shades and brave combinations! I'm especially noticing that colors from the late 1980's/early 90's are coming back in style - pinks, reds, lilacs and turquoise. We want to move away from the beige palettes of the last few years.

Can you explain the cycle of colors that come in and out of style?

People will always seek change in order to look and move forward. After riding out a more muted period of colors in fashion and design, many are craving more intense and vibrant vibes.

Since becoming a mother, has your idea of colors changed over time?

I am a mother of two boys and have always made a point of making sure that all colors are available to them, because color has no gender. I love it when my boys dress in pink, and I think infants look amazing in black. It's really important that the whole color palette be made available to all children, and it's great that parents can choose pacifiers from so many different color options - the pacifier can be the accessory that completes the outfit!
