How much should babies sleep?

A newborn baby sleeps most of the day. On average, a newborn baby sleeps between 16 and 18 hours a day. The older the child gets the less it sleeps, and when the child is around 1 year to 1½ years old it will sleep approx. 12-14 hours a day.

Sleep cycles

Children have different sleep needs. And some children will sleep more or less than the average. Children go through different sleep cycles and will typically wake up every 40-45 minutes and then go into the next sleep cycle. Some children have difficulties going from one sleep cycle to another. As a parent, you can help your child with an easy transition between sleep cycles. You can breastfeed, cradle your baby, sing a song, or offer the baby a pacifier.
